These are the things I’m doing and reading right now.
- Losing weight with a low-carb / keto approach to eating. I’m eating roughly 20 grams of net carbs a day but am not fully entering ketosis that often as we’re in a lazy state at the moment. We avoid “dirty keto” (which is largely low carb junk food eating) by getting most of the carbs from vegetables, nuts and other healthy sources. Socially, we’ll eat and drink as if we weren’t dieting when we see friends every couple of weeks. I find I still tend to choose lower carb options than others just because they appeal less but where it’s something I will really enjoy I have whatever I want. The rest of the time we eat as normal. I’m currently not actively tracking my meals, I spent the first three months tracking strictly and am now estimating what I can eat from experience.
- Avoiding exercising at the hotels I’m at during the week.
- I track my steps, swimming, exercise (the last two are infrequent) using a Fitbit Ionic. I chose this because it would double as a smart watch, a step counter, sleep monitor, heart monitor and I could get it wet if I went swimming. At the start of the year I did swim quite a lot. Before this watch, I used a Sony Smartband which was not as much like a smartwatch but also had some cool features like showing text messages and letting you know when your phone was too far away.
- I use MyFitnessPal to track my eating and weight. They have some great community groups for support and challenges and the app itself is useful for most things you could want.
